Native Americans, horses, and gold all figure prominently in the colorful past of Moscow. Situated in the scenic rolling hills of the Palouse area of northern Idaho, Moscow was a favorite summer haven for the Nez Perce and Palouse peoples and home of the famed Appaloosa horse.
Due to the uncommonly rich soil of the surrounding area, Moscow grew and prospered as an agricultural community. In 1889, Idaho's flagship educational institution, the University of Idaho, was established in Moscow. Today, Moscow leads the state in almost every facet of education from elementary schools through doctoral programs.
